Cavasin: Schauer says ‘No’ to Michigan jobs… AGAIN!
CONCORD – State Senate candidate Al Cavasin called Mark Schauer’s efforts today to keep jobs from coming to Michigan the exact wrong way to pull the state of out its economic problems.
Schauer, a Democrat, led the effort against jobs creation when he tried to limit the number of beds available in a privately run prison facility in Michigan’s impoverished Lake County. His plan to limit bed space to below what the prison was designed to hold would have meant the prison operators wouldn’t have hired as many guards and related personnel. However, Schauer’s efforts failed to gain the support of enough other senators to become law.
“Mark Schauer just doesn’t get that it’s time to aggressively fight for each and every job in our state,” said Cavasin, owner of a Jackson-based company and winner of the 2003 Small Business Person of the Year from the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. “We’re in a single-state recession here and a national leader in our unemployment rate. It’s time for the person who represents Calhoun and Jackson counties understand that.”
The Baldwin facility is operated by the GEO Group, which is in negotiations with the state of California to house prisoners who are not viewed as extremely dangerous.v
Besides this latest anti-jobs vote, Schauer recently voted to increase costs for thousands of local businesses by voting against exempting certain job categories from minimum-wage laws that already had been exempt.
Cavasin is running for the 19th Senate District, which comprises Calhoun County and most of Jackson County.
